Moving the world forward

As the world electrifies and fuel demand eases, traditional refiners are looking for ways to divert their carbon from fuels to chemicals. Sinopec Group is the world’s largest refiner by capacity and produces a range of products including refined fuels, lubricants, petrochemical intermediates such as light olefins and aromatics, and many plastics. The primary objective of this STHC division is to develop profitable processes to produce chemicals from the feedstocks Sinopec uniquely has in abundance with an emphasis on developing products that could have major societal benefits–e.g. monomers for advanced materials.

STHC’s research site is small by Sinopec terms. But it has a group of dedicated scientists, technicians, and engineers with deep expertise in catalysis, organic chemistry, and process modeling. The site has been open since 2018, and since then, we have worked on and delivered several high-impact projects. As we continue to evolve, we have developed particular experience with certain enabling chemical transformations we call platforms, which we leverage in search of the breakthroughs that make our processes feasible.
